Skin Cancer and the Microbiome

“Bacteria on our bodies may be protecting us from Skin Cancer” read the headline in the New Scientist. Research at the University of California, San Diego has started to link the skin microbiome and Skin Cancer.

The researchers explain that your skin is “crawling with bacteria”, something that hopefully should be VERY well known here at the Skin Microbiome School!

There are a huge amount of different microbes, which can change their behaviour depending on the certain strain they belong to, or the overall health of the skin. Translating their talk of “good bacteria” for you, they talk about adding this bacteria to the microbiome and see a decrease in tumour size. From all of our research, this comes about due to the diversity of the Microbiome being increased.

When your skin microbiome biodiversity is high, the bacteria on it work together and are “good”. When your skin microbiome diversity is lowered, “good” bacteria can turn “bad”. This is because your system is weakened and open to attack.

This is yet another study which backs up the fact that biodiversity is the only indicator of skin health, a phenomenon which is replicated across all ecosystems in nature – why should the skin be any different? This was the discovery in our 2017 paper!

Increase your depleted skin microbiome biodiversity

Therefore, to help keep your skin microbiome healthy, giving it the power to fend of disease and attack from pathogenic invaders, you should aim to increase your depleted skin microbiome biodiversity.

When there is less “good bacteria” (meaning the skin microbiome has lower diversity), this will be bad for fending off cancer. So the best thing we can do for our skin? To make sure we keep the diversity as high as possible by using products that are scientifically proven to increase the diversity, using 100% natural ingredients. As we always remind everyone, everyday cosmetics contain harsh synthetic chemicals that destroy the skin microbiome and lower the diversity!
